This endearing face belongs to Huck, a black lab/pit mix who’s about 4-5 months old. He came to the shelter with his brother Finn, and both were in an emaciated state, but have since recovered very nicely. In Finn’s case, he gained some much-needed weight and healed whatever wounds he had.
Perhaps from his past experiences, Huck is very cautious about the world, although he is adjusting well everyday. For example, he loves hot dog treats, and knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’ and loves to run/romp around exercise pen.
Huck was a little nervous about walking, but when I sat down to his eye level and called him, he’d cease resisting and start running towards me, literally leaping into my arms and then giving me a kiss. I think this proves just how loving, trusting, and forgiving Huck can be.
On top of that, Huck is insanely adorable. He’s got long gangly legs which look too big on him and a very big head and a few white patches here and there. He does love to be petted and hugged.
With some time and a steady routine, Huck will be a fantastic dog for anyone who loves dogs. I can imagine him curling up in front of the fireplace, at someone’s feet, or at the door waiting for his favorite person to come home.
Given his attention levels and food motivation, Huck would do very well in puppy obedience classes. I’m not sure how he would do with other dogs, but I think he would be fine with polite and socially appropriate but playful dogs.
There also may be just a tiny bit of mischief there in Huck. 🙂 He may also make a good beach dog, because I think ‘down’ is his favorite position when he’s relaxed and happy, as you can see from the next four photos.
